Foster Care

Foster care is a temporary arrangement in which adults provide for the care of a child or children whose birthparent is unable to care for them. Foster care plays an important role in providing children with a safe, stable and loving environment, until they can be reunited with their family or other permanent arrangements are established.

Children are placed in foster care for different reasons, such as through a court order or under an arrangement with the child’s parent(s) or guardians.

A foster care rate is provided to meet the day-to-day care of the child.

Are you interested in fostering?

In the Northwest Territories, we rely on foster parents and adoptive parents to provide invaluable support to some of our most delicate and vulnerable children. There is always a need for a variety of foster care families and adoption homes in the Northwest Territories. Foster families and subsidized adoption homes are supported to receive financial support to meet the basic costs of day-to-day care of the child based on their age and any special needs they may have.

If you are considering fostering or adopting, please contact your local Social Services Office in your community, email your inquiry to: cfs_info@gov.nt.ca or visit the Foster Family Coalition of the NWT website or call toll free 1-866-233-0136 for more information.
