Plans for potential Canada Post disruption

The GNWT has plans in place in case of a disruption in mail delivery. A list of affected programs are posted below.

Extended Health Benefits/Metis Health Benefits (EHB/MHB)

In the event of a Canada Post work stoppage, Alberta Blue Cross identification cards will continue to be printed and securely held on site until the strike is over. Once the work stoppage is over, the cards will be mailed out. If you require your identification number, please contact Alberta Blue Cross at 1-800-661-6995.

Alberta Blue Cross clients can also use the Alberta Blue Cross mobile app (found in the app store under 'Alberta Blue Cross') to obtain their plan information and ID card information for providers. This app is very easy to use and on the main page has a button called 'ID Card'. If a new client needs their coverage number, they can contact Alberta Blue Cross customer service (please note that the wait times may be higher than normal as Alberta Blue Cross are expecting a higher volume of calls during this time).

If any Alberta Blue Cross client has questions about a reimbursement claim, or how to submit a reimbursement claim to Alberta Blue Cross during the work stoppage, please contact the Alberta Blue Cross customer service department and a customer representative can walk you through the process. In order to speed up reimbursements, clients are encouraged to set up direct deposit with Alberta Blue Cross.

Health Care Cards

In the event of a Canada Post work stoppage, all applications for health care coverage, change forms and renewal forms will be processed as normal. Health Care cards will continue to be printed and securely held on site until the work stoppage is over. Please note that as soon as the health care form is processed, the NWT health care database will reflect up to date health care coverage. Medical clinic and hospital staff have access to the health care database and can confirm health care coverage. You will need to provide identification to the appropriate staff member. If you are travelling outside of the territory, please contact Health Services Administration and a letter of verification will be provided. Once the work stoppage is over, the health care cards will be mailed out.

Vital Statistics

In the event of a Canada Post work stoppage, all applications for birth/death/marriage certificates will be processed and securely held in the Health Services Administration office until the work stoppage is over. Clients that require the certificates urgently will need to request the certificate to be sent by air cargo at the client's expense. Please contact the Health Services Administration office for shipping options. Once the work stoppage is over, we will mail all printed certificates.
