Health and Social Services Professions Act

The Health and Social Services Professions Act (HSSPA) came into force on March 1, 2022.

The HSSPA provides for professional licensing for a number of health and social services professions under one piece of legislation.

Currently, professions under the HSSPA are:

Regulation under the Health and Social Services Profession Act

A group of persons representing a health profession who wish to be regulated under the Health and Social Services Professions Act must apply to be designated for regulation, to determine which professions will be included under the Act.

A group of members of a profession together, or an association on behalf of the profession, may make an application to the Minister of Health and Social Services.

The Executive Council is responsible for deciding which professions will be included under the Act. There are a number of criteria that are used to determine which professions should be designated under the HSSPA, as well as when a profession should be designated. These criteria include, but are not limited to, a profession’s regulatory status in other jurisdictions, whether there are other means to regulate members of the profession other than under the Act, the nature and degree, if any, of the risk to the health and safety of the public if the profession is unregulated, and the potential economic impacts of regulation.
