Order a Birth Certificate

Types of Birth Certificates

A birth certificate is an important personal document, used for:

  • legal identity
  • age, sex or nationality
  • traveling abroad or applying for a passport
  • applying for health services, a social insurance number or a driver’s licence
  • child enrolment in school
  • settling an estate
  • receiving old age pension

There are 3 types of birth certificates that you can order:

  • Birth certificate with parent information
  • Birth Certificate without parent information
  • Restricted photocopy

Birth Certificate with Parent Information

Birth certificates with parent information are recommended for newborns and children 16 years of age and younger.  This birth certificate is typically used for, but not limited to:

  • children’s passports
  • Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada in the registration and/or attaining ‘Secure Certificate of Indian Status’
  • employment purposes

This birth certificate contains the following information:

  • full name of the individual
  • date of birth
  • place of birth
  • gender
  • registration number
  • registration date
  • Names and birthplaces of parents

Birth Certificate without Parent Information

This birth certificate contains the following information:

  • full name of the individual
  • date of birth
  • place of birth
  • gender
  • registration number
  • registration date

Restricted Photocopy

A restricted photocopy is a copy of the original birth registration and is usually required for legal purposes. A restricted photocopy can only be issued if authorized by the Registrar General of Vital Statistics or on the order of a court.

If no reason for the request is provided, your application will not be processed and will be returned to you.
