This page explains how Registered Nurses in the Northwest Territories can access and use clinical support tools made available by the Department of Health and Social Services (DHSS) and developed by Indigenous Services Canada (ISC). Who this applies to
Registered Nurses working in community and primary care settings in the Northwest Territories.
Before you start
Before using these guidelines, nurses must consider:
- Relevant NWT legislation and regulations
- Professional standards
- NWT-specific guidelines
- Employer-defined scope of employment
- Individual scope of practice
Clinical support tools available
DHSS provides access to the following ISC tools through the OneHealth portal:
- Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPG)
- Clinical Care Pathways (CCP)
- Emergency Clinical Care Pathways (e-CCP)
These tools are developed by clinical experts, including representatives from the NWT, and support care in remote and Indigenous contexts.
How to use the guidelines
- Review the ISC Clinical Practice Guidelines introductory chapter as it details the scope and purpose of the CPG’s, CCP’s, and e-CCP’s.
- Use NWT specific guidance at all times except when no other policies or guidelines exist, or further guidance is required
- For example, when providing care to someone with suspected/confirmed communicable disease use the NWT Communicable Disease Manual, first and use ISC Guidelines for supplementary information.
*Of Note – it is important to familiarize yourself with NWT specific resources, policies, and guidelines (these may be from the DHSS, your employer etc.)
- For example, when providing care to someone with suspected/confirmed communicable disease use the NWT Communicable Disease Manual, first and use ISC Guidelines for supplementary information.
- Use the NWT formulary approved for your clinical setting:
These are approved by the Minister of Health and Social Services under the Hospital and Health Care Facility Standards Regulations.
