Overview

This program provides funding for Regional and Community Indigenous Governments, Community Governing Authorities (Band Councils, Métis Locals, Charter Community, or municipal council) and Non-government Indigenous organizations to deliver culturally relevant, community-based options for individuals living with mental health and addictions in the Northwest Territories (NWT).

Available Funding

Total available funds allocated annually: $3,055,000.00

  • Maximum funding available annually:
    • $303,164 maximum to Regional Indigenous Governments, available for multi-year projects
    • $208,164 maximum to Community Indigenous governments available for multi-year projects
  • After April 1, 2024:
    • $208,164 maximum to Community governing authorities (Band Councils, Métis Locals, Charter Community, or municipal council)  or non-governmental Indigenous organizations, not available for multi-year projects
  • $100,000 is annually provided to the Department of Environment and Climate Change to support the On the Land Collaborative

Deadline

Applications from Regional and Community Indigenous Governments in the NWT must be received before the deadline of January 31st, 2024, at 11:59 pm MST.

After April 1, 2024 Community governing authorities (Band Councils, Métis Locals, Charter Community, or municipal council), and non-government organizations may apply for funding on a first come, first served basis for any uncommitted funds.

Eligibility

The following are encouraged to apply:

  • Regional and Community Indigenous governments in the NWT that have negotiated or are in the process of negotiating self-government agreements.
  • Community governing authorities (Band Councils, Métis Locals, Charter Community, or municipal council)
  • Non-government organizations that demonstrate Indigenous outreach and have formed partnerships or receive support from an Indigenous or community governing authority.

If there are multiple competing projects and there is insufficient funding to provide support for each project, priority will be given to projects that demonstrate strong partnerships or demonstrate sustainability beyond the life of this funding. 

Eligible projects are those that meet the following criteria:

  • located in the NWT; and
  • are targeted towards community based mental wellness and addictions recovery programs.

Projects should include, at minimum, one (1) component of the following:

  • On the land programs that blend traditional activities or outdoor recreation with a specific therapeutic focus on mental health and substance use/abuse.
  • Programs with content pertaining to the root causes of problematic substance use (i.e., grief and loss, trauma).
  • Programs with a spiritual or cultural healing component critical to the healing process.
  • Mobile addictions treatment, family and/or aftercare programming.
  • Hiring of local counsellors to support addictions recovery and aftercare programming in the community.
