Presumptive Positive Test for COVID-19 at Gahcho Kue

Investigation underway. Community contacts are being identified. Risk at mine site is low.

 

YELLOWKNIFE 21 October 2020 – A presumptive positive test for COVID-19 has been received at Gahcho Kue diamond mine. The test was completed with Diavik Diamond Mine’s onsite testing equipment.

The presumptive positive test was identified on the morning of October 21.

The individual is currently isolating in a designated isolation area onsite along with 18 potential contacts out of an abundance of caution.

The risk is thought to be low to those at the mine site as a result of the precautions taken onsite and during travel.

The individual was a Yellowknife resident.

Action being taken: Yellowknife

Immediate household members and identified close contacts were quickly informed to isolate and given additional advice by public health.

Public health is arranging for immediate testing of these contacts.

An aggressive contact investigation has been initiated and every possible step is being taken to minimize risk to our communities.

Further updates will be provided as more information becomes more clear.

Medical staff at the mine are working closely with NWT public health officials to guide further actions, including validating the test.

Public health is confident all contacts are appropriately isolated onsite.

A note on presumptive tests

A “presumptive positive” test result means that the test must be confirmed by a public health laboratory.

Presumptive positive tests are treated the same as a confirmed positive test. All steps are taken to contain and investigate.

No matter the situation in the community, you are empowered to practice routine public health precautions which will work to keep you and others safer.

  • Prioritize physical distance of at least six feet, or two metres
  • Wear a non-medical mask when keeping distance is difficult
  • Keep crowds small and spaces large to reduce the risk of transmission
  • Frequently washing your hands with soap and water or hand sanitizer
  • Please maintain self-isolation if you are required to.
  • Stay home if you’re feeling sick – even if your symptoms are mild
  • If you develop any symptoms, contact your local healthcare centre to be assessed for COVID-19.
