Ticket Issued For Travel And Self-Isolation Protocol Order Violation

YELLOWKNIFE (JUNE 11, 2020) – An Alberta resident was ticketed on June 10, 2020 for non-compliance with the Northwest Territories’ Public Health Orders on travel restrictions.

The individual did not stop at the checkpoint on Highway 1 at the 60th Parallel to provide information to, and receive guidance from, Peace Officers as-required. They drove past at high-speed and continued traveling towards Hay River without any plan to self-isolate.

The Border Officers contacted the Department of Infrastructure Highway Transport Officers and the RCMP who safely pulled the individual over after they did not stop for the Peace Officers at the checkpoint. The Compliance and Enforcement Taskforce was contacted and issued a summary offence ticket.

The individual was given a ticket for $1500 with a $225 victim’s surcharge totaling $1725.

The ticket was provided under section 49(1) of the Public Health Act for a failure to comply with orders or directions restricting or prohibiting travel to or from any area within the Northwest Territories during a public health emergency referred to in paragraph 33(1)(d) of the Public Health Act.

The individual was found to be driving an unregistered, uninsured vehicle when stopped by the RCMP, who proceeded to impound the vehicle.

At the individual’s request, the RCMP escorted them to High Level, Alberta as they would be in a better position to get assistance in getting home.
