Adoption

Adoption in the NWT

Adoption provides children and youth with loving, safe and permanent homes. Adoption is the process through which the social, emotional and legal care of a child and youth is transferred from the birth parent(s) to adoptive parent(s). Adoption can occur for several reasons and may look different for every child and youth, depending on their unique circumstances.

In the NWT, adoption is guided by the Adoption Act, Aboriginal Custom Adoption Recognition Act, and Intercountry Adoption Act (Hague Convention).
