Why Indigenous caregiving matters

Indigenous caregiving is rooted in culture, tradition and community. Custom adoption helps keep children connected to family, culture, and identity. Community-led care creates safe, loving environments where children and youth can thrive.

These practices have supported generations and are being reclaimed today. By recognizing and supporting Indigenous caregiving, the GNWT is building trust, promoting healing, and ensuring children are surrounded by people who honour their cultural roots.
