Frequently Asked Questions
If my baby is born in December, are they eligible for the Nirsevimab (BEYFORTUS™) shot?
Yes – all babies born during RSV season (approximately November and May) are eligible. Babies that are 0 to 3 months old at the start of RSV season, are also eligible.
Can my infant get the Nirsevimab (BEYFORTUS™) shot at the same time as other vaccines?
The RSV monoclonal antibody can be given at the same time as other vaccines and will not impact the effectiveness of the antibody nor any of the other vaccines.
My child is one year old and entering their second RSV season, can they get the shot?
Certain high-risk infants will be eligible for a 2nd season of RSV protection. Talk to your doctor if concerned.
At this time, only infants aged 0 to 3 months entering their first RSV season are being prioritized. This is because they are at the highest risk of severe illness and hospitalization if they get RSV. The risk of severe illness lessens with each subsequent RSV season. If you are concerned, speak to a health care provider for advice.
What are other ways to protect my baby from RSV?
- Breastfeeding: Helps to boost your baby’s immune response and helps lower RSV-related inflammation of the airways.
- Avoid Exposure to Cigarette Smoke: Infants exposed to cigarette smoke are at higher risk of severe RSV infections and other viral infections.
- Monitor for High-Risk Conditions: Infants who are born prematurely or have congenital heart defects are at higher risk for severe RSV illness. If your baby has a high-risk condition, make sure to get appropriate medical care and monitoring. Your baby may be eligible for another RSV shot in their 2nd RSV season
- Keep everyone in your households immunizations up-to-date.
- Practice healthy respiratory practices like washing your hands, coughing or sneezing into elbow, clean and disinfect high touch surfaces.
