YELLOWKNIFE, August 18, 2021 - The Office of the Chief Public Health Officer (OCPHO) is declaring a COVID-19 outbreak in the Sahtú Dene Nechá Kǫ́ Long Term Care Facility in Norman Wells.
OCPHO declares an outbreak in a long-term care facility when one person who lives or works in the facility develops COVID-19. As of August 18, 2021 there are two confirmed cases of COVID-19 linked to the long-term care facility.
Northwest Territories Health and Social Services Authority (NTHSSA) has implemented protective measures in long term care for the duration of COVID-19 pandemic, including continuous masking of all staff and visitors, vaccination, staff and visitor screening questionnaires, and limitations to numbers of visitors.
The facility has been closed to visitors since August 15, 2021 because of community transmission in the region. On August 17, 2021, OCPHO and the NTHSSA initiated further outbreak response measures including site wide testing for staff and residents, and enhanced environmental cleaning.
The Department of Health and Social Services will provide updates on the outbreak.
