Plans for Canada Post Service Interruption Impact on Health and Social Services

The GNWT has plans in place to manage services during the Canada Post service interruption. Below are the details for impacted programs.

Extended Health Benefits (EHB) and Métis Health Benefits (MHB)

  • Alberta Blue Cross will print identification cards and hold them securely until mail services resume.
  • If you need your ID number, contact Alberta Blue Cross at 1-800-661-6995.
  • Clients can also access their ID card information using the Alberta Blue Cross mobile app (available on Google Play and Apple App Store). The app includes an “ID Card” button on the main page for quick access.

For new clients needing their coverage number or anyone with questions about claims and reimbursements:

  • Call Alberta Blue Cross customer services at 1-800-661-6995.
  • Set up direct deposit for faster reimbursements.
  • Note that wait times may be longer due to higher call volumes.

Health Care Cards

  • Applications, change forms and renewals will be processed as normal.
  • Apply through eServices to submit your application and check its status online.
  • Health care cards will be printed and securely stored until the strike ends.
  • Your health care coverage is updated in the NWT health care database as soon as your application is processed.

If you need proof of coverage:

  • Clinic and hospital staff can confirm your coverage using the database (bring photo identification).
  • If you are travelling outside the NWT, request a verification letter from the Health Services Administration Office by emailing healthcarecard@gov.nt.ca or calling 1-800-661-0830.

Vital Statistics

  • Applications for birth, death, or marriage certificates will be processed and held securely until mail services resume.
  • Apply through eServices to submit your application and check its status online.
  • If you urgently need a certificate, request delivery by air cargo at your expense. Contact the Health Services Administration Office for shipping details by emailing hsa@gov.nt.ca or calling 1-800-661-0830.
