AI scribe pilot and your care

Overview

The Government of the Northwest Territories is testing Mika AI Scribe in select health care settings from January to December 2026. This tool uses artificial intelligence to create draft clinical notes during your visit, helping providers spend more time focusing on your care instead of paperwork.

Decide if you want to participate

  • Participation is your choice.
  • Your provider will ask for your permission before using the AI scribe tool.
  • You can say no or withdraw consent at any time without affecting your care.

What happens during your visit

If you agree to participate:

  • The tool  runs through a web browser on your provider’s computer. It listens through the computer’s microphone and uses AI to create a draft note during your visit.
  • The draft note is automatically deleted after 7 days.
  • The tool does not record or keep audio files.
  • Your provider will review and edit every note for accuracy.
  • The tool does not replace your provider’s judgment or decision-making.

How your privacy is protected

Your privacy is protected under the Health Information Act. Safeguards include:

  • The tool does not record or keep audio files. It transcribes live speech into a draft note during your visit.
  • Your provider reviews and edits every note for accuracy before manually entering it into your electronic medical record.
  • Only your care team can access your information.
  • Data is stored only in Canada
  • Cybersecurity protections prevent unauthorized access.
  • The pilot follows GNWT Use of AI Guidelines

Where and when the pilot is available

  • The pilot runs from January to December 2026.
  • The pilot is available across the NWT. There are 80 licenses, so only a limited number of providers can use the tool at the same time.

What happens next

At the six-month mark of the pilot project, GNWT will review results and share findings before deciding on future use.
