Prescription Drug Benefits

Household Net Income

Your household net income is the total of your net income, and (if applicable) your spouse’s net income.

Annual Family Deductible

Each year, you (or your family, if applicable) must cover 100% of your eligible prescription drug costs until you reach your deductible. Once your drug costs have reached this amount, the government begins covering a percentage of your eligible costs until you reach your annual family maximum.

Annual Family Maximum

This protects you from high expenses. Once your contribution towards eligible drug costs reaches the annual family maximum, the government covers 100% of any additional drug costs for the rest of the benefit year.

Copayment/Cost Share

After you reach your deductible, you pay 30% of eligible costs. The government covers the remaining 70% until the end of the year or until you reach your annual family maximum.

Dependent

A dependent is someone under the age of 19 years who is legally dependent at the time of applying for benefits. Dependents do not have their income included in the household net income.

Spouse

A spouse is someone who:

  • is married to another person; or
  • is in a marriage-like relationship with another person for two years; or
  • has lived in a marriage-like relationship with another person for less than two years, but who has a natural or adopted child with that person.

A marriage-like relationship between two people who are not married is called a common-law relationship. A common-law relationship begins as soon as you are living together.

Note: A spouse with income must have their income included in the household net income along with the program applicant’s income.
